Docker with multiple websites

We have about 30 websites made with Joomla across 3 servers. I am thinking of deploying them with docker and have some questions.
Should I make every website self contained (apache, php, mysql)? Or is it better to have on container for apache, one for mysql and one for every website?
Is it considered a good approach for scaling a website with docker? Creating a docker compose file and spawning multiple replicas of websites that have more traffic?

Veeam backup to tape compatibility

My organisation takes backups to tape. We have an HP LTO-6 Ultrium 6250. We're looking at the possibility of switching to Veeam, but I've been told by our reseller that some people have reported issues with backup to tape when using Veeam.

I've not really found any complaints online about it, and I'm struggling to find anyone who has complained about Veeam at all. Has anyone else come across issues backing up to tape with Veeam?

Meltdown & Spectre Megathread

Due to the magnitude of this patch, we're putting together a megathread on the subject. Please direct your questions, answers, and other comments here instead of making yet another thread on the subject. I will try to keep this updated when major information comes available.

If an existing thread has gained traction and a suitable amount of discussion, we will leave it as to not interrupt existing conversations on the subject. Otherwise, we will be locking and/or removing new threads that could easily be discussed here.

Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE 2018-02-16: I have added a page to the /r/sysadmin wiki: Meltdown & Spectre. It's a little rough around the edges, but it outlines steps needed for Windows Server admins to update their systems in regards to Meltdown & Spectre. More information will be added (MacOS, Linux flavors, Windows 7-10, etc.) and it will be cleaned up as we go. If anyone is a better UI/UX person than I, feel free to edit it to make it look nicer.

UPDATE 2018-02-08: Intel has announced new Microcode for several products, which will be bundled in by OEMs/Vendors to fix Spectre-2 (hopefully with less crashing this time). Please continue to research and test any and all patches in a test environment before full implementation.

UPDATE 2018-01-24: There are still patches being released (and pulled) by vendors. Please continue to stay vigilant with your patching and updating research, and remember to use test environments and small testing groups before doing anything hasty.

UPDATE 2018-01-15: If you have already deployed BIOS/Firmware updates, or if you are about to, check your vendor. Several vendors have pulled existing updates with the Spectre Fix. At this time these include, but are not limited to, HPE and VMWare.

How to access localhost on Ubuntu Linux Sub-system for Windows?

How to access localhost on Ubuntu for Windows?

I'm on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, version 1709, OS Build 16299.125

I've installed the Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Linux Sub-system locally for Web Development purposes.

I've placed an info.php file into \var\www\html but when I attempt to access it at 127.0.0.1/info.php via my Browser in Windows, I receive the error:

"This page isn’t working 127.0.0.1 is currently unable to handle this request. HTTP ERROR 500"

info.php has the following code in it:

<?php // Show all information, defaults to INFO_ALL phpinfo(); ?>

If I access 127.0.0.1 via my browser in Windows, I receive the Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page.

And that's it. Just trying to get this working. I've installed LAMP, Composer, Platform.sh CLI and that's it on this server thus far.

Edit Found an error log in \var\www\html called "C#003A#005Cxampp-new#005Cphp#005Clogs#005Cphp_error_log". Opened it and it says:

[15-Dec-2017 10:18:41 America/New_York] PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0

Not sure what that means. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Looking for backup solutions for small company

Up until now, I was using a local crashplan backup repository. I had a linux machine running crashplan daemon and i would install crashplan on any device and point the backups to this machine. Now that crashplan doesn't offer this option anymore, I'm looking for alternatives.

What I really need is a way to pull all the local files from a dozen of computers (windows machines all of them running w7 and w10) and store all that data somewhere (local if possible) so I can recover it in case of hard disk failure or infection or whatever disaster.

What I liked from crashplan was that it deduplicated the data and you could finegrain the backups and revert to files that were deleted weeks ago.

I'd like to know about any solutions you can recommend me. If possible, for constant backup, but I think once per day backup would be more than enough, as long as I can keep backups from a couple of weeks back.

I prefer if there's a free solution (asking for money in small companies is difficult this days even for something as justified as this, but I don't want to enter this debate - again-) but I'm open to paid subscriptions or other suggestions.

Thanks!

Best SAN solution for a $30k budget?

Hey r/sysadmin,

I'm looking to replace an aging (and failing) Lefthand P4300 G2 4TB SAN solution. I've been given a budget of $30k, and I'm just trying to figure out what's out there that even gets close to that price range... here's my current setup:

  • 2 x P4300 G2 units, at separate locations, mirrored

  • dedicated private fiber connection between the two locations

  • dedicated switching at both ends

  • Current solution is serving up LUNs for VM datastores (about 12 VMs, from 3 ESXi hosts), and for our Exchange data

  • I'd like to gain some breathing room on the storage... I've got 88% of the 4TB provisioned. Exchange might move to O365 but I don't want to bet on it.

We also run a newer (circa 2014) StoreVirtual cluster set up almost identically so the idea of integrating sounds great but I'm not married to HP hardware.

Am I going to find any solution in that budget, or at least close?

PS - Sorry for spelling or grammar errors, I'm writing this at almost 1:00AM while I wait for this cluster to finish re-striping after one of the nodes randomly rebooted for the 12th time in the last 48 hours. Hence my interest in replacement...

2:00AM Edit: He's dead, Jim. I lost connection to the node and decided to drive into the office... when I got here, it was off, with no standby lights. Pressed power, no joy. Removed PSU modules and replaced with known good ones, nothing. Reseated anything and everything that could be reseated, still nothing. Nothing I can do at this point except hope the redundancy works the way it's supposed to and find someone who can ship new stuff really fast.

Best Business Class Laptop Suggestion?

I am thinking about going with the Dell XPS 15 9560. I am looking to purchase 40 of these and my boss told me that money is no object. We are both a programming/IT management company so although I know programmers will love this machine, I am worried about the lack of an RJ45 port. I know a usb-c to rj45 adapter can be purchased but this is kind of annoying and not sure how it works within Windows in terms of setting a static I.P. and stuff like that. I am looking for 16 GB of ram, 512 GB SSD, i7 processor, and preferably a 15 inch screen. I'd like to know if there are still any powerhouse business laptops that have RJ-45 connectors, optical drives, etc.

EDIT - Thanks everyone for all the help, you guys have been very helpful! I decided to go with this laptop - http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-laptop-17t-1yu08av-1?jumpid=ma_2017-cyber-sale~laptops~11~CTO~1YU08AV_1~HP_ENVY_Laptop_-_17t with everything upgraded. Not neccessarily business class but it has everything we need.

End of the year heads up!

First and foremost I'd like to thank you all for allowing /u/bad0seed and I to participate in the community. It's been one hell of a year and a pleasure.

With the end of the year approaching and some of you having left over budget or working on end of the year projects. Make sure you are maximizing the end year promotions. Every manufacture no matter what calendar they use for their end of year will give an incentive to close business in December. HP, Tegile, Dell and Meraki have been HUGE for us.

Also please keep in mind that some pricing will take longer because of the flood of requests and the last 2 weeks of the year is when the skeleton crews start. So manufactures like Cisco will have half their staff running. If you have to have your purchases on site by end of December, get the orders in immediately. Work with your vendors/VARs to escalate when needed.

If you have any questions always feel free to reach out to us and Happy Holidays!

Trying to decide between two online masters programs

Hey reddit. I currently work as a jr. database admin and I want to do some further schooling beyond my BS in Info Systems. My employer will pay for 50%, but I want to keep the tuition extremely cheap, since I am also slowly saving up money for a down payment on a house. Where I work though, just having a master's would increase my salary a tiny bit, so it is worth having one. The total tuition cost will end up being around $5,000 to me with this assistance ($10k if I had no assistance). Other programs I have seen cost almost double these two programs, and kind of gets into territory that I don't want pay.

I have found two master's that seems to focus on what I want to focus on in the future (information security and database stuff). I know they are not top rated schools, but they are from real state universities, not suspect like some other places.

I am wondering people's thoughts on these programs:

How has the business I work for been around for 15 years? How can I tell clients secretly to dump him?

I've been working at my MSP for 2.5 years now and I think I'm ready to leave. I am 20 and in university for my bachelor's degree in CS. I know it doesn't have to do with IT, but there are no IT/CIS degrees at my state university.

My employer does not know much about technology. He generally chooses the cheapest product to sell to our clients, and has us purposely do short fixes to increase ticket count and keep the client's money coming. A lot of products he sells to clients he hasn't even paid for, he is leasing. He also breaks EULA's and has us use free/evaluation/trial version of software meant for personal use for business use.

I get confused from his description of "cloud." We host virtual machines ("terminal servers") for clients using VirtualBox on our HP desktop computers ("servers"). We give our clients the cheapest all-in-one home/personal Windows licensed desktops ("thin clients") we can find, and provide only a remote desktop connection shortcut to our virtual machines on the HP desktops. THIS is what we call the "cloud" and sell to clients.

The all-in-ones that clients are provided are actually better than what we provide on the virtual machines, but the resources on the local machines aren't being utilized... We limit every client to 50-100 GB of storage and 4-8 GB of RAM (not per user, per client). Any additional storage and RAM, they will need to pay a lot more.

Needless to say, we get calls everyday about things lagging and crashing. A client with 15 customers running under 8 GB of RAM and running programs like Tableau, SAP, and/or QuickBooks... Along with x amount of web browser tabs. Even if we did have real terminal servers, wouldn't it make sense to only run the programs needed on those terminal servers, and other programs (like Spotify and Chrome) on their local machine.

We (me and four other guys) are not allowed to reason with our employer. It will be like "Why don't we see implement something like this," he pretends to care, and then switches back to what he thinks is better. We aren't allowed to do any planning or maintenance type of thing if we don't already have a ticket for it. So we can't look at anything or do anything unless there is a ticket or call for it. But since we don't allow clients to Email us for communication, we are always getting calls.

I am applying for other jobs but I don't think I learned anything helpful in these 2.5 years. I learned more at school even if it wasn't as practical in IT than I did here. This was just to get me help me with school although the pay isn't very good. Mandatory OT and on-call is not paid either. I worry that my employer will also sabotage me when future employers call him for reference. Please advice?

Hey, how about a patch-window on...

Friday December 22nd 2017, 6pm?

Honestly suggested by a customer.

We had a good LOL from that suggestion.

We had previously agreed that, given sufficient heads-up time, I could do it on a Friday, off-hours. It's really an in-place upgrade PHP 5.5 -> 7.0, MariaDB 5.5 -> 10.1, so I need some time.

I told him that Friday was not going to happen, for a variety of reasons (general freeze-window, my scheduled vacation, availability of other system engineers, from other departments (like if we needed a restore) etc.pp.

He's looking for a new date, in 2018, together with his customer.

Weve all felt screwed by systemd, but what if Systemd invited you to touch its unit files and connect to its D-Bus socket?

I am here to confirm that systemd erotica does indeed exist. If you want to read something so ridiculous, the author's page on it is here. It's written by Michael W. Lucas who has done various technical books on the BSDs in particular.

His current patreon goal reads:

For a paltry $500/month I will write a whole bunch of stuff, but not--NOT--systemd erotica.

Not again, that is.

Transactional Emails Being Marked as Spam / DNS Records Not Recognized

Hi all,

Hoping one of you with email experience can assist me.

Over the past three weeks my organization's outgoing email has been flagged as spam by clients using GMail, 365, Barracuda monitoring, etc.

  • My group uses Sparkpost as our SMTP relay. Our systems are configured to use that instead of PostFix or any other PHP-based methods originating directly from the server.

  • Our TLD is technically a subdomain of a primary webspace domain that was established before my arrival. This domain is hosted and managed at media temple.

  • Sparkpost reports that my sending domain is correctly signed with DKIM. When I use Sparkpost's validation tool and provide our selector, I'm told the record is correctly configured.

  • When I use an SPF verification I receive confusing feedback. When I run a script to determine if our record is available and properly formatted, I am told no records exist. However, when I copy my SPF record from (mt) DNS and check it for formatting, I'm told the record is correctly written.

  • I performed an mxtoolbox.com blacklist search and my domain is not listed. I’m told my DNS record is correct, and that my DMARC record is absent.

  • I’ve added a DMARC record to my DNS based on the DMARC builder provided by Sparkpost. Even after 48 hours for DNS to propagate, I’m still being told that the record does not exist. Part of this may be due to the SPF record being malformed, since as I understand it DMARC is partially contingent on SPF.

I’m at my wits end with this one! Has anyone had a similar experience? Were you able to resolve?

Permissions issues when creating new VMs uisng Hyper-V installed on a Guest VM (as opposed to Hyper-V on baremetal)

I'm hoping someone has a little more insight into how the "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines" group is supposed to work, because I think that it is the root of the problem.

(NOTE: Hypervisor is Windows Server 2016 and Guest VM is Windows Server 2016)

Here's a summary of my issue:

When new VMs are created via Hyper-V GUI, it's my understanding that the VM's Id Account is supposed to be automatically added to the "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines" group. When I install and use Hyper-V on baremetal, this works as expected and using the Hyper-V Manager GUI is no problem with respect to creating new VMs. But, if I install Hyper-V on a Guest VM, the Hyper-V GUI always complains about permissions issues (i.e. no access to the brand new .vhdx file it just created or related virtual machine config files it just created).

So I've since made a PowerShell script to "fix" permissions (i.e. specifically add the VM's Id Account to all of the relevant directories/subdirectories), but my issue is, I shouldn't have to do this. I would like to be able to have the Hyper-V GUI work as expected so I don't have to create new VMs and "fix" permissions via PowerShell all the time. Here's the relevant blurb from my PowerShell Script that "fixes" permissions before any devices are attached to the new VM and before the VM is started for the first time:

$VmVhdFile = "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks\MobyLinuxVM.vhdx" Write-Output "Creating dynamic VHD: $VmVhdFile" $vhd = New-VHD -ComputerName localhost -Path $VmVhdFile -Dynamic -SizeBytes $global:VhdSize $DiskPathParentDirsPrep = $VmVhdFile $DiskPathSplit = $VmVhdFile -split "\\" [System.Collections.ArrayList]$AllParentDirectories = @() for ($i=0; $i -lt $DiskPathSplit.Count; $i++) {' $DiskPathParentDirsPrep = [System.IO.Path]::GetDirectoryName($DiskPathParentDirsPrep) $null = $AllParentDirectories.Add($DiskPathParentDirsPrep) } foreach ($dir in $AllParentDirectories) { if ($($dir -split "\\").Count -ge 2) { if ($(Get-NTFSAccess -Path $dir).Account -contains "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines") { Write-Host "Fixing permissions on MobyLinuxVM.vhdx and its parent directories..." $null = icacls $dir /grant ("$($vm.Id)" + ":F") } } } Write-Host "Fixing permissions on MobyLinux Hyper-V configuration files..." $HyperVConfigDir = "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V" $AllHyperVConfigItems = $(Get-ChildItem -Recurse $HyperVConfigDir).FullName $null = icacls $HyperVConfigDir /grant ("$($vm.Id)" + ":F") foreach ($path in $AllHyperVConfigItems) { if ($(Get-NTFSAccess -Path $path).Account -contains "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines") { $null = icacls $path /grant ("$($vm.Id)" + ":F") } }

Anyone have any insight into these permissions issues that only seem to impact the Hyper-V Manager GUI running on a Guest VM?

Surface Book 2 issues with MDT deployment

Has anyone else successfully deployed a Surface Book 2 with MDT? I am having a weird issue with my deployment. Everything seems to deploy fine with no errors(applications, drivers/firmware, etc.). But after it finishes, the next reboot will disable the keyboard. Everything else with the performance base works fine including the touchpads, usb ports, keyboard back lighting, battery, gpu, etc. But the keys on the keyboard do not work. Very strange...does anyone have any ideas?

RICOH Printer on print server resetting itself

Hey there,

I recently updated the printer driver for my Ricoh devices on the print server from the PCL Universal Driver 4.15 to 4.16. I use the approach that I install the driver in the driver section of the printer management MMC, and just do a quick switch on our 25 printers or so with a powershell command. Annoyingly enough, this resets the settings of every printer where I updated the drivers, so I have to re-apply them. Unfortunately I still have to apply some individual magazine settings by hand. This is the PS command:

$ricohPrinters = Get-Printer -Name "*RICOH*" $ricohPrinters | Set-Printer -DriverName "RICOH PCL6 UniversalDriver V4.16" # Setting a new printer driver resets all settings, so reapply our company defaults: $ricohPrinters | Set-PrintConfiguration -Color $false -DuplexingMode OneSided

Question thrown in: Does anyone experience the settings reset upong a driver update, too? How about other printer manufacturers?

But my main issue is, that since I updated to 4.16, every week a random printer resets itself to the default settings, which for Ricoh are color:$true and duplexingmode:twosidedlongedge.

I never had those random resets in the past three years, except for once after every time I update the drivers.

I won't open a case with Ricoh, as those motherfuckers don't have a fucking clue anyway. (They don't even provide a firmwareupgrade for 5 2-year-old MFP's that still have to run on smb1). But I was hoping if you could share your experiences with RICOH, or other manufacturers.

Thoughts on USB-c docks

we run two to three primary laptop types (MBP, Dell Lattitude 7xxx, Dell XPS 15).

For our newer laptops, we've been buying Dell W15 docks to connect to two monitors, KB, mouse.

Only real complaint is that the dock has HDMI, miniDP, and vga. Not having much luck with running miniDP adapter and HDMI. In some cases, users are reporting visual issues with running an HDMI cable and a vga display (on identical monitors).

Does anyone have any recommendations on docks to checkout. Our users with three monitors don't like this dock (only handles FHD on two monitors).

Unusual IP in Exchange Online message trace, message delivery failed to the UK Ministry of Defense??

We had a user with difficulty sending mail yesterday afternoon and when looking at message traces noticed something unusual. Even though the message was being sent between two internal users in North America the error has an IP from the UK Ministry of Defense, Joint Forces Command:

Reason: [{LED=450 4.7.5 General queue quota exceeded.};(FQDN=);{IP=25.174.250.148};{LRT=}]

It looks like the MOD is an Exchange Online customer, and there was a service advisory around the same time that may be related, but has anyone else seen this before in their logs?

Shot down my first remote site

(Bit of a rant. First of all, please be gentle. I am going from lurking to posting slowly, also this is my first post around here. Also, I am a newbie infrastructure admin, 5 months and counting...)

Yesterday I learned that a better network design could have saved my day. Or thinking twice.

I locked myself and everyone else out of the default gateway router at a remote site. VLAN mumbo jumbo. Luckily the remote desktop sessions persisted, because someone chose to just hook the gateway router to a random switch far away from the actual connection to the main office 10 years ago. Not business critical I guess, yay.

From there on, every attempt to solve the problem remotely failed by some problem that was already acknowledged by me or my fellow network infrastructure admin colleague before, but optimization projects just don't seem important as long as everything works. Here are the frustrating parts why I had to go there:

1. Think twice
First and foremost, a second thought could have prevented the problem. I did even say to myself "Goodbye, remote site." when I flicked the switch. But hey, don't shoot the messenger.

2. No redundant routers
Would have solved the issue in literally 2 minutes if I had access to any switch on the remote location.

3. Bottleneck design
Every device at the remote site has configured the gateway router as default gateway. While this might be good practice in a remote setup with transfer networks and a rendundant gateway, it was just frustrating in our setup. Imagine knowing that you can reach the needed switch perfectly well, but all the answers are relayed over a dead chunk of plastic dangling somewhere off the network.

4. Information missing about laptop at remote site
I wanted to access the remote switches via the travels-laptop and a teamviewer session. Hey, it seems that nobody knows the sim pin for cellular access, beware it being documented anywhere. Wifi is not available at all.

5. Thin client configuration testing incomplete
Last call was puppeteering a resident worker to access and change a switch to be accessed remotely. Well, the browser I wanted the worker to use to access the web-interface was nowhere to be found on the thin client. Looks like this standardized option it is not being delivered to the remote site thin clients by the server.

6. [Discovered while on site] Broadband connection router knows a route that relays traffic for the directly connected remote network over the gateway router
This router is managed by a company providing professional IT-services. F*cking what?!

There were some minor setback and confusion caused by inconsistent IP addressing across otherwise similar remote sites, but I spare you the details. You know that.

Since these kind of incidents just happen and I basically still had fun going there, fixing and collecting letters full of thankfulness (just kidding, people there couldn't work, so they were pretty demanding), now I think of this situation as my sysadmin adulthood ritual. As long as I also learn a lesson or two, this cannot bring me down.

And the lesson learned definitely is: Never ever save a configuration on a remote site without checking it again. And maybe a third time.

(Oh and maybe design good networks, document and test your shit. But that is not urgent.)

Cant wrap my head around image pushing using SCCM

Hey guys,

The sysadmin who worked here left, and while I had a few months to learn from him, we didn't dive into SCCM.

I'm helpdesk, and the new sysadmin is more of a NetApp and VMware guy. So he says he can't help me with the SCCM and same goes for my manager.

So now I would like to get the hang of it myself, and while I read literally dozens of articles and watched a few videos about deploying images via SCCM to our environment, I can't understand how to make use of it in my work place.

We already have good images, I just want to add another one of my own to add this subject to my knowledge. It might seem like the wrong thing to focus on as a help desk kid, but it's something that might be essential for my next workplace, or who knows where.

Anyway, so I need help figuring my step by step plan.

We have an SCCM server, which has the WDS role on it. But I think it's not in use.

To install an image on a machine, I PXE boot it and pick the image from the choices I have there (win 7, 10, etc).

In SCCM, when I go into Software Libraries > Operating System > Task Sequence > I have the ones we already have.

What do I need to do to start fresh? I have my own Windows ISO, and I would like to customize it by installing some software of my choosing, adding to a domain, giving it a domain name prior to installing it, etc.

What should I do?

Thanks

Is there a way to get notified when the results of the command are different compared to the previous one?

Hello,

I want to be notified when the results of running a command on a Linux terminal are different than before. So I am notified by urlwatch and script. -- https://github.com/thp/urlwatch However, urlwatch does not provide features such as checking past history.

Is there a way to get notifications when jenkins or rundeck are used to run commands differently than before?

ex) 1. command run 2. result "a" 3. command run 4. result "a" 5. command run 6. result "a" 7. command run 8. result "b" ==> notification 9. command run 8. result "b" 10. command run 11. result "a" ==> notification

thank you for helping me. :)
